Klopp Backs Alexis Mac Allister After Liverpool’s Draw with Brighton: ‘Mistakes Are Part of the Game’

Estimated read time 4 min read

Liverpool made an early summer transfer window acquisition in the form of Alexis Mac Allister, as they sought to revamp their midfield. The Argentine World Cup winner has made a strong impression thus far. However, in a 2-2 draw against his former club Brighton, Mac Allister’s error led to a goal for the opposition. Yet, manager Jurgen Klopp refrained from dissecting the mistake after the match, choosing instead to commend the midfielder’s resilience.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Kopp has jumped to the defence of Alexis Mac Allister after his error led to Brighton’s opening goal in the 2-2 draw in the Premier League on Sunday.

Klopp moved early in the summer to bring the World Cup winner to Anfield as the team’s midfield underwent an overhaul with several players coming in, and more leaving.

The Argentine has impressed for most of the current season, but he was at fault in the first half when he lost possession to Simon Adingra, who scored for Mac Allister’s former team after 20 minutes.

Mohamed Salah turned the game on its head with a quick-fire double just before half-time, before Lewis Dunk snatched an 78th-minute equaliser.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Klopp praised Brighton for their efforts but admitted his team did not play as well as he wanted.

He said: “I really like what they [Brighton] do. Anyhow, if we are a little bit better today, and I think we could have been better, we should have won the game.

“In our good moments, we didn’t score enough and Brighton gave us problems, but they didn’t create a lot. Each goal is frustration, so who cares about how.”

Discussing Mac Allister’s error, he continued: “The most difficult thing to do is to make a mistake against your old team and then come back in the game like he did.

“We want to press them high. Maybe our timing wasn’t great. There were situations close when we were nearly there and then the challenge in a footballer’s life is to keep going.

“The boys got pretty much their reward for the effort they put in. Putting teams under pressure is important and then that’s how it is. Mistakes happen.

“Second half, we played outstanding, an attack ended up with Ryan Gravenberch nailing the crossbar. I don’t think Brighton would have given up but it would have helped us for sure.
“Everyone who came on, it was hard to get the rhythm of the game and so it’s a draw. That’s it.”

There was some consternation amongst fans that Pascal Gross had not been sent off for pulling down Dominik Szoboszlai to concede a penalty, but a week after the VAR controversy concerning Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal against Tottenham, Klopp made an arch comment but largely ignored the decision.

He said: “I didn’t even realise it, to be honest. So it was a penalty and didn’t think about [a red card]. But I heard now it’s about [a] goalscoring opportunity.

“If it’s a goalscoring opportunity, we can maybe ask a question here. What do you think was a goalscoring opportunity?

“Yeah, but obviously what can I say about that? I’m over it. I’m too old for these kind of things. They will not change it, I heard, anymore.”

Roberto Di Zerbi was almost sent off in the match as he protested with match officials, already on a yellow card, and the German stepped in to try to calm him down.

Asked about the incident after the match, Klopp praised the Brighton manager for the job he has done at Brighton, and his passion on the sidelines.

He went on to express, “I must emphasize, I hold immense respect for what he’s accomplishing. Frankly, I’m a genuine admirer of it. I have a deep love for football, and when someone enters the scene with the influence he wields, it’s something not to be taken lightly. When he appeared to be getting a bit agitated, I leveraged my experience to help him regain composure.”
